When we think about courses, we likely to think of a complicated, elegant meal served by a butler wearing a stiff uniform, but courses are simply parts of a meal. If we’re served a salad, a main dish, a vegetable, and an ice cream, we are served a meal consists of four courses. Many Italian restaurants serve six course meals:
Antipasti. These are the hors d'oeuvres, amuse-gueules usually served with the aperitif at the beginning of the meal.
Primo piatto. This is the entrée. It is usually made up of a soup followed by a small plate of pasta, polenta or risotto.
Piatto di mezzo or Secondi Piatti. This is the main course. It can be either fish, meat, poultry, game or eggs.
Contorni. These are the vegetables. They are always served in a different plate.
Insalata verde. The main course is followed by a salad preferably prepared at the table.
Formaggio e frutta fesca. Cheese and fresh fruits are served after the salad.
